Bacon: A Love Story

I’d like to talk about something very near and dear to me: bacon. Good ol’ grease-filled, heart-attack-inducing, slap-your-leg-delicious, comes-from-a-pig (sad. oh well) bacon.

Especially diner bacon. If you live in the DC-Metro area, you need to hit up Bob & Edith’s on Columbia Pike in Arlington. They have really awesome bacon. And awesome food. I could live there. And I could literally live there, because they are open 24-hrs and have free wi-fi. That’s all a girl needs. Don’t let the romantic comedies fool you. Bacon, a bathroom, and internet access. Done. This was my breakfast the last time I was there, and I’m pretty sure that they cook their home fries in bacon grease. You should try that. It works with eggs, too. Your life will never be the same. I’ll shut up now…

Mmmmmmmmmm. Jealous? You should be.

Yeah, I lied. But you’ll thank me for elaborating.

For my friend’s birthday this month, she made a beyond delicious cheesecake with an oreo crust, chocolate mousse and espresso ganache. I know, you’re drooling, right? Here’s the recipe. Cake! (Be appreciative, because Ally and I gchat way too much, so it was a real hunt to find where she had sent me that link.) Since we were having cake, we decided to make some dinner to go with it. We didn’t really have anything in particular in mind, so I went to one of my favorite cooking blogs. No, I’m sorry, my absolute favorite cooking blog, The Pioneer Woman. If you don’t know her, you should. Everything I’ve made from her blog and/or cookbook has been a hit with both the Hubbster and friends alike. On the front page was the answer: Bacon-wrapped scallops with chili butter. Hello, lover. In a strange twist of events, we didn’t take a picture of the scallops or the cake, so you’ll just have to take my word for it that they were beautiful and scrumptious.

I have a saying. It goes like this: “Everything tastes better with bacon.” Like scallops. Or steak. Or eggs. My theory has been put to the test recently by Jack In the Box, who is making a bacon milkshake. I’m serious. Weird, right? So I’ve since then had to amend my statement to “Almost everything tastes better with bacon.” Though I’ve seen many a cooking show turn it into a dessert with some brown sugar in the oven, so I may have to give that a try soon. If it goes well, maybe I’ll give the milkshake a shot. Who knows? Bacon is delicious.

*If you’re a vegetarian, I’m sorry. Not because I may have offended you by mentioning that I like to eat things that come from a pig, but because you don’t get to eat bacon. That’s rough.

  1. Great post! I agree that bacon makes just about everything taste better. Try adding it to oatmeal; it makes a delicious breakfast combination. I always feel guilty that I am not doing enough to convert vegetarians; bacon and pork spareribs are my go to conversion points. And bacon is one of those wonderful foods that even bad bacon is good bacon (like pizza).

  3. The Weston Price Foundation would be pleased to know about your food preferences. I do love bacon! But the question is: does it love me too much? Now I’m hungry for bacon grease–oh my. Thanks for this–I think–Barb

  4. My saying is that everything can be made better by Peanut Butter or Bacon. As in, something will be better by adding one of those 2 things, although not everything can be made better with both. Chocolate is the exception, both of those things make chocolate better, individually. Don’t try PB and Bacon, though, it’s awful.

    But even a bacon hater like me still loves your style of blogging, and I must say, you make it look a lot better than I normally think it is! (;

  6. Bacon is one of those unsung meats. Add it to anything!

    You know what you should try – Pancetta – grill it in the oven for a few minutes until it goes crispy and it just melts in your mouth. You will love it.
